Bizeljsko - Sremič

The surrounding area is named after the two most important villages. It lies on the left bank of the Sava river. The Sotla river borders the district to the east, the Štajerska district to the north and the Lisca and its neighbouring hills to the west. The district is characterised by the repnice, cellars buried in the sandy soil. The vineyards are scattered over many hills.

The climate is subpanonian, with cold winters and warm to hot summers. The soils are very varied and change frequently.

The varieties are quite similar to those in Štajerska Slovenia, with a significantly higher proportion of reds, around 40%. The most common white varieties are welschriesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, riesling, muscat and pinot white. Reds are dominated by modra frankinja and žametna črnina. The speciality of the area is the white and red Bizeljčan.

More recently, there are more and more good producers of sparkling wines. As one of the coldest wine-growing regions, it has excellent conditions for producing sparkling wines made from indigenous žametna črnina, rumeni plavec, chardonnay and pinot noir.
