Rose wines

Rose wines are a special type of wine, distinct from whites and reds. They are mainly red wines produced according to the white wine process. The vast majority of Slovenian rose wines are classified as fresh rose wines. Due to their refreshing nature, rosé wines are often an excellent choice for summer drinking and various social occasions.

There are several ways of producing rose wines. The most common methods are the direct pressing method and the short maceration method. In the direct pressing method, the grapes are crushed and then pressed to extract the colour pigments from the skins. In the short maceration method, the grapes are macerated for a shorter period of time, after which the juice is drained off and fermented. Contact with oxygen is minimal, and grapes of more aromatic varieties are used. Typical examples are merlot and pinot noir. The use of stainless steel tanks, alcoholic fermentation at low temperature and short maturation are compulsory. They are suitable for drinking immediately after bottling and are not intended for bottle ageing.

Characteristics of rosé wines:
Colour: the important feature is a brilliant light reddish colour. Shades may range from pale to intense dark pink, depending on the grape variety and the production technique.
Taste: fresh, acidic, sweet, lively, light.
Aroma: intense, aromatic, varietal, fruity.
Serving temperature: usually best when chilled. The recommended temperature is between 8 and 12 °C.
