The Vipava Valley is the second largest wine-growing district in Slovenia. It is bounded by the Nanos Mountain, the Trnovska plateau and the Karst, and is open to the west towards the Friulian plain and the adriatic sea.
The Vipava river flows through the valley The valley is famous for its wine and fruit production. It is one of the windiest areas of Slovenia.
The mediterranean influence reaches deep inland. In the western part of the valley, the valley is at its widest, with an altitude of around 60 m, while towards Nanos the valley narrows and slowly rises. It is divided into the Upper Vipava Valley in the east and the Lower Vipava Valley in the west, where the mediterranean influence is much greater. The climate is continental, but with a mediterranean influence, which means that winters are mild and summers are hot and dry. Spring frosts and hail occasionally cause damage, and drought is a major problem in summer.
Vipava produces bold white and red wines, which are distinctly varietal. Vipava also preserves the largest number of indigenous wine varieties in Slovenia. The conditions for producing rosé wines are also excellent. The most widespread varieties are merlot, sauvignon blanc, malvasia, rebula, cabernet sauvignon, welschriesling, chardonnay and barbera. Zelen and pinela are varieties that grow only in the Vipava Valley. It is also home to the pioneers of organic wine production in Slovenia.
